Our laboratory has recently outlined cancer health disparities for Hispanic patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia who live near the United States/Mexico border. In a separate project, we have associated lipid metabolism with outcomes in myeloid malignancies. In the present study, we hypothesize that blood lipid levels available in electronic health records will correlate with outcomes in Hispanic patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

Determine genetic mutations within blood cells of individuals diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Acute myeloid leukemia is a deadly disease with poor prognosis. This study will help identify novel therapeutic targets to improve treatment efficacy and ultimately overall survival in patients.

Scientific Approaches

To determine mutational status of cells in blood samples, whole exome sequencing data will be first aligned to reference human genome, and mutations will be detected using Mutect2 algorithm.

Anticipated Findings

We anticipate to identify novel mutated genes within blood samples of acute myeloid leukemia patients, which can ultimately help in designing novel therapeutic strategies to improve survival in patients.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, which begins in the bone marrow. There are four major types of leukemia, acute leukemia, chromonic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chorionic myeloid leukemia. The American Cancer Society's estimates for leukemia in the Unites States for 2023 are about 59619 new cases of leukemia of all kinds and 23710 death form leukemia. Among the new cases, about 20380 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia, and most of them are adult cases. Our group want to find out by exploring the data what are the factors that put some people at higher risk on Leukemia, and also we want to find out the mortality rates for the leukemia patients with different demographics. In addition, we want to find out how many days hospitalization dates when patients are diagnosed with leukemia.

Scientific Approaches

We want to find out by exploring the data what are the factors that put some people at higher risk on Leukemia, and also we want to find out the mortality rates for the leukemia patients with different demographics. In addition, we want to find out how many days hospitalization dates when patients are diagnosed with leukemia.

Anticipated Findings

Delays in diagnosis can have a significant impact on the outcomes of patients, relating to survival, response to treatment and even quality of life for the patient. We like to diagnose the leukemia as early as possible to treat the patients.
