Control Groups to Clients enrolled in Medically Tailored Meals
Scientific Questions Being Studied
Our non-profit community based organization provides medically tailored meals for clients living with severe and chronic illness. The meals are arranged via insurance or philanthropic pathways and provided at no cost to clients. Although we can track progress over time and most clients are to report improvements, both in self measurements and quality of life metrics. Our research requires a control group in order to determine the extent of improvements particularly in anthropometric measures such as BMI, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, clinical markers (lipids, cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c, etc) in order to have a better estimate of the effect of our intervention. We are grateful for the the All of Us research repository as it will provide us which much needed unbiased control data that can help us quantify the effect of medically tailored meals and nutrition therapy on clients and health outcomes.
Project Purpose(s)
- Disease Focused Research (gestational diabetes; uncontrolled chronic conditions)
- Population Health
- Social / Behavioral
- Control Set
Scientific Approaches
-We are planning to collect data for newly enrolled clients and find parallels and or control cases for these individuals.
- We are also planning to find questionnaires that could be collected from our clients available on this dataset.
-We will be primarily comparing clinical changes over 6-12 month periods.
Anticipated Findings
There is limited information on the effect of medically tailored meals. As this intervention is a behavioral intervention provided by social service organizations, the net positive effects challenging to quantity. We using the All of Us research data as a control arm to the effects of nutrition therapy on quality of life, food insecurity and clinical outcomes.
