Scientific Questions Being Studied
Our work is based on understanding what risk factors contribute to some of the most debilitating common skin conditions. We seek to find associations between chronic conditions and skin conditions such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, melanoma, and other dermatologic conditions to increase our understanding and knowledge about these disorders and contribute to the research community. For instance, understanding that there is an association between chronic alcohol use and atopic dermatitis can better inform our scientific community and healthcare community to practice culturally competent care that seeks to improve the health of patients through holistic approaches.
Project Purpose(s)
- Disease Focused Research (Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis, and Skin Cancer)
- Population Health
- Drug Development
- Ancestry
Scientific Approaches
We plan to build case-control models with our disease variable and exposure variables and calculate odds ratios as well as chi-squares to determine if there is an association and whether there is an increased odds of developing the disease with a given risk factor.
Anticipated Findings
We anticipate that chronic conditions will be linked with many skin conditions. Moreover, we believe that we will find that many social habits may also affect exacerbation of skin conditions. This is crucial information to help healthcare workers understand how to educate patients about ways to reduce their risk of exacerbation or risk of developing skin conditions.
