v6 - Health Equity IRAD
Scientific Questions Being Studied
We intend to perform an analysis to see the impact on health outcomes and status when socioeconomic status (income, education, employment) is controlled for, but other factors are variable, such as race, ethnicity, etc. Our initial analysis will be testing the hypothesis on different diseases and see if there are patterns among groups with similar SES that result in different health outcomes. The initial goal will be to see if we can reproduce this study (Collin, L. J., Jiang, R., Ward, K. C., Gogineni, K., Subhedar, P. D., Sherman, M. E., ... & McCullough, L. E. (2019). Racial disparities in breast cancer outcomes in the metropolitan Atlanta area: new insights and approaches for health equity. JNCI cancer spectrum, 3(3), pkz053.). We'll also look at other factors available in AoU to see if we can identify any of the drivers of these disparities.
Project Purpose(s)
- Population Health
- Methods Development
Scientific Approaches
We are planning to try different regression methods and possibly other methods such as clustering. We'll use the tools available in Python in the AoU notebooks. We may join other datasets publicly available such as the heat vulnerability index, social vulnerability index, and others from sources such as AHRQ, CDC, and others to see if patterns tied to geospatial attributes also have an impact.
Anticipated Findings
If our results are successful, we will aim to contribute our general methodologies back to the field, and hope to aid the general community in investigating Health Equity and SDOH and what some of the key drivers of health disparities might be.
Demographic Categories of Interest
This study will not center on underrepresented populations.
