Scientific Questions Being Studied

What is the the effect of Fy-/- genotype on WBC and ANC?

White blood cell (WBC) counts and absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) are known to vary by race/ethnicity. African American and other populations including Latinos with African ancestry and some Middle Eastern populations have lower WBC counts and lower ANC. Our goal is to identify how WBC and ANC should be interpreted among carriers of Fy -/- genotype.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (neutropenia)
  • Population Health
  • Educational
  • Ancestry

Scientific Approaches

We will check distribution of WBC counts and ANC in different populations. Will study the association of Fy -/- genotype and WBC counts and ANC in different populations.

Anticipated Findings

We hope to establish new standards to evaluate WBC counts and ANC in different populations. The results may improve the interpretation of test results of WBC counts and ANC in different populations.

Whole genome sequencing of Latina breast patients

We study genetics of breast cancer in Latina. The specific question is, are there specific genetic mutations in Latina breast cancer patients.

  • Population Health
  • Educational
  • Ancestry

Scientific Approaches

We would like to use the whole genome sequencing data in "All of Us". We will analyze the whole genome sequencing data from Latina breast cancer patients. We will analyze the data using plink, gcta, etc.

Anticipated Findings

The goal is to find unique genetic mutations in Latina breast cancer patients. Our findings may improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Latina patients.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

What is the heritability of asthma in Latino? Genetic factor plays an important role in asthma. Asthma heritability has not been studied extensively in Latinos and African Americans. We are going to use data in "All of Us" to investigate asthma heritability in Latinos and African Americans.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Population Health
  • Educational
  • Ancestry

Scientific Approaches

We are going to use the software GCTA (Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis) to estimate asthma heritability in Latinos and African Americans. We will calculate the genetic relationship matrix (GRM) from all the autosomal SNPs. We will then use restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and Haseman-Elston (HE) regression to estimate the variance explained by all SNPs.

Anticipated Findings

The heritability of asthma ranges between 35% and 95%. Our results in Latino and African American will show the importance of the genetic factor in asthma in these 2 populations.
