Mitochondrial gene variants, smoking and glaucoma risk
Scientific Questions Being Studied
We are interested in better understanding how genetic factors and environmental influences contribute to the development of primary open-angle glaucoma, in hopes of using this information to develop precision medicine approaches to disease diagnosis, risk stratification and treatment.
Project Purpose(s)
- Disease Focused Research (primary open angle glaucoma)
- Ancestry
Scientific Approaches
We plan to generate genetic risk scores and polygenic risk scores to assess disease risk. We will also test the interaction of these scores with environmental risk factors to test the combined effects of the two. This will be performed in multiple, diverse datasets, including the All of Us dataset.
Anticipated Findings
We anticipate that these studies will help better understand the contributions of genetic variation, environmental risk and development of primary open angle glaucoma, which will enable more targeted approaches to disease diagnosis and treatment.
