Scientific Questions Being Studied

It is widely known that significant health disparities exist related to access to care. One of the barriers to patients achieving optimal care is health literacy. It is hypothesized that race, ethnicity, and age are contributing factors to decreased health literacy and leading to higher prevalence of certain chronic conditions. This will be analyzed by reviewing respondents' answers to survey questions related to health literacy and comparing this to incidence of certain chronic conditions in these populations.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Population Health

Scientific Approaches

Researchers will use the data available from survey questions to review participants' responses related to health literacy. The data will be analyzed based on race, ethnicity and age. Analysis of the chronic conditions suffered by these individuals will also be done.

Anticipated Findings

Researchers anticipate finding that those of minority racial and ethnic backgrounds will have lower levels of health literacy and higher incidence of chronic disease. Researchers are uncertain how this will be teased out based on age of respondents and will analyze the data to find this answer. Findings will help to determine ways to target these populations to address/improve health literacy issues.
