SGM CVH
Scientific Questions Being Studied
I aim to examine how family-related factors and intersectional discrimination impact cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. This question is critical because SGM populations experience unique social and structural stressors, including family rejection or support, and discrimination based on their intersecting identities (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation). Both family dynamics and discriminatory experiences have been linked to heightened CVD risk. Understanding how these factors interact and influence CVD risk factors such as hypertension, cholesterol, and diabetes can help guide interventions to improve cardiovascular health in this vulnerable population.

Scientific Approaches
I will use the All of Us dataset, which includes rich data on social determinants of health (SDOH), family history, and intersectional discrimination, alongside extensive health and cardiovascular measures. Using a cross-sectional design, I plan to conduct multivariate regression analyses to explore the associations between family-related factors, experiences of intersectional discrimination, and CVD risk factors. I will adjust for potential confounders such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Additionally, I will explore the interaction between family support and discrimination on CVD risk to understand how these factors may moderate each other.
Anticipated Findings
I anticipate finding that lower family support and higher levels of intersectional discrimination are associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk factors among SGM populations. Specifically, I expect that individuals who experience both family rejection and intersectional discrimination will have a higher prevalence of hypertension, elevated cholesterol, and other risk factors compared to those who report higher family support and lower levels of discrimination. These findings will contribute to the body of scientific knowledge by highlighting the critical role of family dynamics and multiple forms of discrimination in shaping cardiovascular health disparities, thereby informing more targeted interventions for SGM populations.
