Scientific Questions Being Studied

We are exploring the data to formalize a specific research question. Broadly, we are interested in the mental health of people living with HIV (PLWH) and multimorbidities. What is the burden of multimorbidity across sub-groups of people living with HIV (PLWH)? This is relevant to science or public health due to the longer survival rates of PLWH due to advanced treatments, but potential impact to quality of life as a result of multimorbidity.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (HIV and multimorbidities )
  • Social / Behavioral
  • Educational

Scientific Approaches

We will begin with a review of the literature, which will then guide the exploratory analysis of data. Multimorbidity burden will be compared across groups of PLWH.

Anticipated Findings

As the number of chronic conditions increase in PLWH, there is an increased risk of poor mental health and/or substance use disorder.

Demographic Categories of Interest

  • Race / Ethnicity
  • Gender Identity
  • Sexual Orientation

Scientific Approaches

We will begin with a review of the literature, which will then guide the exploratory analysis of data. Multimorbidity burden will be compared across groups of PLWH.

Anticipated Findings

PLWH with psychiatric and substance use disorders experience poorer treatment outcomes compared to PLWH with non-psychiatric co-morbidities.
