Maternal Health

My goal with this exploratory study is to look at prediction models for gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. I will attempt to understand patterns in past diagnosis that could point towards future diagnosis of hypertension during pregnancy.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

My goal with this exploratory study is to look at prediction models for gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. I will attempt to understand patterns in past diagnosis that could point towards future diagnosis of hypertension during pregnancy.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Disease Focused Research (pre-eclampsia)

Scientific Approaches

I plan to use association rule mining on prior diagnosis codes. This will enable us to develop prediction models for low resource settings without heavy use of AI or ML.

Anticipated Findings

We hope to be able to identify patterns that can help us detect gestational hypertension. If successful, we will attempt to validate the model on other datasets.

Demographic Categories of Interest

This study will not center on underrepresented populations.

Scientific Questions Being Studied

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by the impaired ability to control the use of alcohol, despite resulting in negative social, economic, and health consequences. Relying on alcohol screening questionnaires may have limited efficacy in detecting AUD if questionnaires are not administered, screening is considered disruptive to clinical workflows, and patients are reluctant in reporting behavior that is perceived socially unacceptable. We propose an exploratory study to identify key markers present within a patient’s health records that may indicate problematic patterns of alcohol abuse, and to observe the differences in these markers before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project Purpose(s)

  • Social / Behavioral

Scientific Approaches

Our team is currently conducting environmental scans of previous research on EWS of AUD. Our team is also conducting semi-structured interviews with clinical and technical SMEs to elicit information about strategies to identify, extract, and operationalize clinician validated EWS of AUD. Next, we will develop an AI model to identify the most important factors associated with the risk of AUD. Before beginning the AI model development, we hope to undertake an exploratory assessment of EWS for AUD. Additionally, we hope to compare patterns and signs of alcohol consumption before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anticipated Findings

Our study's output will be a research publication that analyzes key indicators pointing to excessive alcohol use and how these indicators (and propensities for alcohol use in general) have varied since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demographic Categories of Interest

This study will not center on underrepresented populations.
